We have found an excellent stereo directional microphone for shooting with the movie mode of the EOS 5D Mark II. Delkin Pop-up Shades offer protection for the LCD screen on the back of your camera and also provide easier viewing in bright sunlight. The unusually-named Fat Gecko Mounts a great for supporting a camera firmly on the handlebars of a bike, or on any smooth surface (such as the bonnet or roof of a car). Finally, there is the Snug-it Pro silicon camera skin which provides protection for your camera while leaving complete access to buttons, dials and sensors. If you have not seen Issue Four of our shop catalogue, you can download it or have it posted here. EOS 5D Mark II VIDEO Here is a 23 minute presentation from MacVideo.tv. It introduces the EOS 5D Mark II, shows some excellent footage and looks at a few of the brackets and supports which turn the camera into a video unit. ADOBE UPDATES Adobe has introduced Photoshop Lightroom 2.4 and Camera Raw 5.4. The updates add support for the EOS 500D. Also released is Adobe DNG 1.3. This update for the digital negative specification adds support for opcodes for tracking complex actions in RAW file conversions. More information is available available here. FAREWELL TO KODACHROME Kodak has closed the shutters on Kodachrome 64. This iconic film was launched 74 years ago and was the favourite of many photographers - but now accounts for less than 1% of Kodak's film sales. Kodachrome 25 was discontinued in 2002. "Mama don't take my Kodachrome away," sang Paul Simon in his 1973 hit. Read the lyrics and see a YouTube video here. NIGHT VISION MODULE FOR EOS CAMERAS A new night vision module is available for EOS full-frame digital cameras such as the 1Ds Mark III and 5D Mark II. When used with the Electrophysics AstroScope 9350EOS-FF, these digital cameras deliver bright high resolution green images of night-time scenes. The night vision module fits between the camera body and the lens, giving a full viewfinder image with no vignetting. Features such as optical image stabilization remain fully functional. The night vision module features variable gain control enabling the night-time photographer to increase the brightness of the images when ambient lighting is such that images are otherwise too dark to photograph. Normally, the AstroScope delivers the equivalent of 8-10 f-stops light gathering improvement. Dark, moonlight or starlit nights are transformed into bright, high-resolution scenes. With the variable gain feature, the available light amplification is further improved. In addition, when photographing relatively well-lit night-time scenes, the gain can be minimized to reduce image noise. Because the night vision module is well-suited to law enforcement and military applications, this US-manufactured accessory is subject to export controls and restrictions. For further information, visit Electrophysics. DIGITAL CAMERA RAW UPDATE Apple has released Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.6. This update extends RAW image compatibility for Aperture 2, iPhoto 08 and iPhoto 09 for the EOS 500D / Rebel Digital T1i /EOS Kiss Digital X3. The upgrade requires Mac OS X 10.5.6.
